
Hiring Story Producer for Friends of Commodore Barry Park
OVERVIEW
Friends of Commodore Barry Park is seeking a paid part-time story producer for the annual Community Heroes project which highlights everyday heroes who have nurtured and strengthened the surrounding community. Community Heroes Fort Greene is a collaboration between Friends of Commodore Barry Park, Fort Greene Park Conservancy and Photoville.

Expected Start Date: Apr 10, 2023
Time Frame: 7 weeks (Early April – June)
Hours: 60 hours total (roughly 8 – 10 hours per week)
Exact schedule will depend on the timing of the photo and interview sessions.
Hourly Rate: $25/hour
This position will report directly to the members of Friends of Commodore Barry Park.
SKILLS REQUIRED FOR A STRONG CANDIDATE:
- Strong organization: scheduling, digital file management
- Clear and friendly communication
- Platforms: Google Docs, Zoom, Dropbox
- Proximity is a core value of this project, so applicants who live, work, or have a relationship with Fort Greene will be prioritized.
ROLE DETAILS:
The Story Producer role will begin after the 6 heroes for Commodore Barry Park 2023 have been selected, and span until each hero’s portrait and stories have been created. This role includes the following tasks:
- Outreach to photographers and youth writers (via local youth organizations, schools etc)
- Communicate with heroes about their availability for an in-person photo session and a virtual interview.
- Pair each hero with a photographer and youth writer to create their portrait and story.
- Coordinate the timing and location of each photo and interview session
- Support youth writers through the preparation, interview, and writing process.
- Collect and organize all creative assets (photos, text, credit) to share with the exhibition graphic designer.
ABOUT COMMUNITY HEROES
Community Heroes is a community organizing and public art project celebrating everyday heroes in New York City, neighborhood by neighborhood. Local community groups and local artists work together through community meetings, a nomination process, and storytelling sessions to produce a public art exhibition. It is a way for communities to
- Celebrate residents who strengthen and support their neighborhood
- Invite local artists and storytellers to document and showcase neighborhood stories through a public art project
- Listen to neighbors through outreach
- Celebrate and gather together
- Organize a working group of storytellers, community members, organizations, faith leaders, educators, historic and new residents
