Fort Greene

Robert Smith

Throughout Robert Smith’s time residing in Fort Greene, he was known for many of his beloved personality traits. He was an artist at heart; having sewn all his clothes; a meticulous organizer, having never lost anything due to his detailed storage system; and a tinkering problem solver, always creating new trinkets or fixing appliances. But above all, he is celebrated and remembered as a model neighbor and a true individual.

“He was always figuring out ‘how can I be of service to other people,’” said Ketriana Yvonne, a longtime neighbor of Mr. Robert, as many of his neighbors called him. “That was just who he was.”

Mr. Robert could be found walking the streets of Fort Greene striking up conversations with everyone who walked by, no matter if they were a longtime friend at a storefront or a new face to the neighborhood. He made it his mission to serve others, offering to fix household items or oftentimes giving away new products or handmade crafts to support those in need.

Extending his generosity beyond Fort Greene, Mr. Robert proudly served as a custodian at the Greenwich House for more than 40 years, even being honored as the only employee with a permanent recognition plaque.

Mr. Robert’s son, Ivan Smith, recalled that his father “had an aura about him,” and that he lit up every room he walked in. Neighbors would always look forward to seeing Mr. Robert attend community events or help in volunteer groups, such as the youth committee at the local police station.

While Sir. Robert (as his neighbors affectionately called him) passed in recent years, his legacy is being carried on by those he impacted throughout his life.

“His community was wherever he was,” said Ketriana. “His community was the world.”
