Ebony Bailey says Fort Greene is the kind of community that “shapes and reshapes you along the way.” Reflecting on the three generations her family has lived in Fort Greene, Ebony sees her deep community roots as a way to always help her neighbors.
In 2023, Ebony joined the NeighborhoodStat (NSTAT) program, following in the footsteps of her mother’s community service to give back to the long-term residents she connected with over the years. She now manages the Myrtle Avenue Partnership’s Commercial District Needs Assessment (CDNA) Grant, involving organizations to help revitalize neighborhood commercial corridors in a way which prioritizes the input of local residents, especially seniors, whom she plans events for in her role on the Myrtle Avenue Senior Advisory Council.
Ebony’s ability to organize makes her a vital member of the community. When a child was fatally struck in a crosswalk on his way to school, she led a volunteer crossing guard effort, which opened the door for critical change. She then petitioned for a speed bump, cameras, and daylighting in the intersection; her actions delivered some peace of mind to a grieving community.
Ebony believes change starts from the ground up, with simple acts like picking up litter leading to greater neighborly respect. She aspires that nearby Park Avenue will one day be as aesthetically vibrant as Myrtle Avenue, fostering a better experience for local residents through beautification projects.
Ebony is a guide for Fort Greeners, relying on the diverse voices of locals to improve quality of life. Above all, Ebony Bailey sees Fort Greene as a community of resilience, and she continues to work for the well-being of her neighbors.
