Janise Mitchell

Although she was born in Philadelphia, Janise Mitchell has been an incredible asset to the New York community for her entire life. She taught New York City public school kids of various ages throughout her thirty-year tenure. Ms. Mitchell helped children by teaching them historical thinking skills through her after-school programs. Even after her retirement, she never stopped teaching, taking only a 3-month break before throwing herself into a new role as a museum educator at the Center for Brooklyn History, where she now runs a program teaching kids invaluable skills to do academic research in public schools. She teaches at numerous schools all across Brooklyn as a part-time educator.

Her work is not only restricted to children, but she is the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church’s activism committee chair. She has organized numerous rallies, coat drives, and other fundraisers. Currently, she focuses on bail reform, where she works with a coalition between multiple churches, including temple Beth Elohim, the Church of Gethsemane, and many others. She is using her skills as an educator to bring awareness to this underpublicized issue, and she has organized meetings with city council members to discuss solutions to it. Even with all of her vital work, Ms. Mitchell always stays humble. When talking about her activism, she only said “we,” never once trying to take sole credit for her work.

Ms. Mitchell serves as a model for all of us with her persistence, humility, and activism, and she deserves every bit of honor she gets for her work.
