Fort Greene

Mr. Ed Carter

1933 - 2011

Mr. Ed Carter was the ‘grandfather’ of the community. He founded and ran the Fort Greene Youth Patrol for over 30 years as well as Fort Greene Empowerment and Fort Greene Rebuild. He worked with the City Council and The Black Cowboys, teaching local youth to ride horses. “He didn’t walk fast, but he was everywhere.

Quotes about Mr. Carter:

“He believed in hard work. He was a military man. The minute we arrived, he said, ‘Grab a broom, rake or shovel and get to work.’

“Even later in life when he had lost his sight, if you came up to his car window he’d know who you were by the sound of your voice! He would ask ‘How’s your cousin?’” That’s how much he knew and watched over the community.”

“He only retired when he passed on.”

Quotes from Mr. Carter:

He said:

“Take pride in who you are. Be a man first.”

“Each one teach one.”

“Stand alongside your brother, not behind.”
