While not originally from the neighborhood, James Sessoms has worked hard to inspire the youth of the Fort Greene community. Through organizations like Switching Lifestylez, the Uncle Chase Foundation, and BlocPower, Sessoms worked to strengthen not just his community, but the entire city.
Growing up in Lafayette Gardens, James Sessoms was raised in a tight-knit environment, instilled with beliefs he carries to this day. After leading a criminal lifestyle, he ultimately had to learn the hard way by finding himself incarcerated. Sessoms made the most of his time, earning a college degree and qualifying for early release. He disallowed time behind bars from stopping his life; Sessoms chose to use it as a starting point. His time in prison showed him what he wanted, and inspired him to help keep others from repeating his mistakes. He joined The Focus Forward Project’s 12-week program, which provides formerly incarcerated adults with educational resources and support to navigate social stigma and future opportunities. Sessoms, now a graduate of the program, supports The Focus Forward Project today. Through his participation in Switching Lifestylez, Sessoms focused on assisting youth by helping people reflect, learn, act, and evolve to embrace the healthy, caring, stable individual within.
Sessoms aims to raise financial literacy among youth, believing the ability to control your finances is key. “My position is always–I was them before, so I know the pitfalls I’ve experienced. So I try to deter them from that road to destruction and lead them on the path to greatness.”
When asked what message he wanted to share, Sessoms stressed the importance of sustaining unity. Sessoms believes, “It takes a village mentality. When I was growing up, it was my whole family taking care of me, the whole building taking care of me. It was all hands in.”

Así que intento disuadirles de tomar ese camino hacia la destrucción y guiarlos por el camino de la grandeza.”
Cuando le preguntaron qué mensaje quería compartir, Sessoms destacó la importancia de mantener la unidad. Sessoms cree en la “mentalidad colectiva de que ‘se necesita una aldea’. Cuando yo era pequeño, toda mi familia me cuidaba, todo el edificio me cuidaba. Era todo el mundo.”
